: street art on the way home from the dmv :

While "Pitufos" may sound like a nasty Spanish insult (see: "puta"), I have it on good authority that it is in fact Spanish for "Smurfs." I've known this for about a decade and always thought it was simply one of those bits of information you find personally fascinating but will never prove useful in your daily life. Until now.

That doesn't really answer the question of why. Why would someone tag "Smurfs" ("Pitufos") on a garage in Smurf-blue (Pitufo-azul) spray paint? Is this some new Long Island City gang? Should I be worried that they are going to "keep Smurfing" ("sigue Pitufando") past my apartment late at night? Will I start seeing gang headquarters disguised as mushrooms with big red dots on them? Are they going to capture Gargamel and set his cat free? What was the cat's name again?

Though I don't understand this graffiti completely, I do find it quite funny. And I feel that I am in on a little secret, which always makes me happy. I'll let you know if I see Gargamel's cat wandering around the streets of LIC, lost without his cold-hearted owner to give his nine lives a sense of pupose . . .

Azriel. The cat's name is Azriel. Yes, I remember when I found out Pitufo was smurf too. About a decade ago.
